This is a view from just outside the Leicester Arms in Penshurst, through the gap in the timbered houses to the churchyard, which is in full sun. I have always liked painting images that have a look through , because it is so much easier to give the picture depth. Penshurst Place is behind the church and was the home of Sir Philip Sydney in Elizabethan times. He was the model courtier to Queen Elizabeth and wrote the narrative poem Arcadia. Many television series and films have been shot at Penshurst including the film Anne of a Thousand Days....The other Boleyn Girl and recently Wolf Hall. I have prints of this picture.
